The Cultural Solidarity Fund is an initiative administered by the Indie Theater Fund with leadership by LEIMAY that provides relief microgrants of $500 to artists and cultural workers including individual artists, administrators, production staff, custodians, art educators, ushers, guards, and more and prioritizes Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), immigrant, disabled, and trans and gender-nonconforming individuals who have been most severely impacted by the pandemic.
In the spirit of coalition and resource sharing, NYC arts and cultural organizations of all sizes and structures continue to come together to grow a joint Cultural Solidarity Fund. The current Organizing Group of the CSF is seventeen organizations that meet weekly and are involved in decision making and idea implementation processes through collaborative work.
To date, more than 200 organizations and individuals have come together to raise $125,000. We received an overwhelming 2,722 applications with 56% of applicants expressing dire need for food and housing funds, far outpacing the current funds available. We were able to fund 9% of applicants (81% from our priority groups) and our new goal is to raise $300,000, in order to fund all priority applicants who reported the highest level of urgency.
The Indie Theater Fund (Administrator of the CSF) is a 501c3 organization registered in the state of NY. The Indie Theater Fund was established in 2012 as a not-for-profit service organization that provides unrestricted funding, professional development, and other support to the indie theater community, including operating an Emergency Fund and a loan program. Contributions to The Indie Theater Fund are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. The Indie Theater Fund is lead by Randi Berry, Executive Director.
LEIMAY (Lead Organizer of the CSF) is an immigrant, BIPOC artist-run, community-focused arts entanglement founded in 1996 and incorporated as a 501c3 in New York City in 2003. LEIMAY serves audiences and artists worldwide and in New York City through a plethora of programs, and body-rooted works, creating access to contemporary forms of art at the intersection of the visual and the live arts. LEIMAY supports artistic exploration; community-based resource sharing; artistic collaboration, and professional development. LEIMAY produces and presents the collaborative interdisciplinary creations of its co-artistic directors Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya and the LEIMAY Ensemble locally, nationally, and internationally.
